About your Midlands Camino Walk

Step into the heart of the KZN Midlands and walk through landscapes that feel like a storybook unfolding under your feet.

Your Camino begins with the forests and waterfalls of the Karkloof, then winds through the historic charm of Curry’s Post and Nottingham Road. Across farmlands where blue cranes dance, into the rolling foothills of the Drakensberg, you’ll pass dairy farms and trout dams that tell the tale of Midlands life. History calls at Fort Nottingham, built in the 1800s, before you take on the climb to the summit of iNhlosane, the highest peak in the area with views that will leave you in awe. From there, the trail carries you into the magical Dargle forests and on to the wild beauty of the uMngeni Valley Reserve. Each day reveals something new — grasslands, rivers, mountains, indigenous forests, and always the warm Midlands hospitality.

But this walk is more than scenery. With time on your feet and moments alone, it becomes a journey inward — a chance to reflect, reset, and reconnect. The KZN Midlands Camino is a challenge, a gift, and a celebration of life in one of South Africa’s most diverse and beautiful regions.

About The Midlands Camino

What is a Camino? By definition it is:

  • A long distance route.
  • It is a journey rather than a hike.
  • It is easily accessible to all.
  • It has community involvement and ownership.
  • It usually has a sacred destination and spiritual or personal growth dimension.

The idea of the KZN Midlands Camino came from a heartfelt desire to support Midlands Hospice, and its continuous need to fund its vital mission.   Chantal Hathorn, a nurse at Midlands Hospice, and her husband, Doug, completed the 865km Camino de Santiago in 2022, along with board member Robin Barnsley and his wife, Sharon. Their stories of perseverance sparked a vision to walk the KZN Midlands, bringing together residents and visitors for a shared purpose. Teaming up with Tracy Woodland, the dream transformed into an exciting reality and the first Midlands Camino took place in April 2024. The walk was not only a fund-raising event for Midlands Hospice but it also fostered a spirit of collaboration, community and compassion in over 30 local businesses and organisations, celebrating the strength and unity of the KZN Midlands. The Midlands Camino is now an annual event that uplifts and sustains all who are involved and in-particular to help raise funds for Midlands Hospice.

With ample time on your feet and moments alone, you can reflect and contemplate life. The KZN Midlands Camino provides an opportunity to challenge yourself with long-distance walking while taking in the local landscape and the way of life in this diverse and beautiful region that you will journey through.
