About The Midlands Camino

What is a Camino? By definition it is:

  • A long distance route.
  • It is a journey rather than a hike.
  • It is easily accessible to all.
  • It has community involvement and ownership.
  • It usually has a sacred destination and spiritual or personal growth dimension.

The idea of the KZN Midlands Camino came from a heartfelt desire to support Midlands Hospice, and its continuous need to fund its vital mission.   Chantal Hathorn, a nurse at Midlands Hospice, and her husband, Doug, completed the 865km Camino de Santiago in 2022, along with board member Robin Barnsley and his wife, Sharon. Their stories of perseverance sparked a vision to walk the KZN Midlands, bringing together residents and visitors for a shared purpose. Teaming up with Tracy Woodland, the dream transformed into an exciting reality and the first Midlands Camino took place in April 2024. The walk was not only a fund-raising event for Midlands Hospice but it also fostered a spirit of collaboration, community and compassion in over 30 local businesses and organisations, celebrating the strength and unity of the KZN Midlands. The Midlands Camino is now an annual event that uplifts and sustains all who are involved and in-particular to help raise funds for Midlands Hospice.

With ample time on your feet and moments alone, you can reflect and contemplate life. The KZN Midlands Camino provides an opportunity to challenge yourself with long-distance walking while taking in the local landscape and the way of life in this diverse and beautiful region that you will journey through.
